Pachmarhi is the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh. The hill station is popularly known as the "Satpura ki Rani" (Queen of Satpura ranges). It is located at a height of 1,100 m in Hoshangabad district in a valley of the Satpura Range. The main attraction here is Dhupgarh, the highest point in the central India region and the Vindhya and Satpura range is located here at an altitude of 1100 m. This is a small town and most of its area is under the administration of the Pachmarhi Cantonment Board, serving the Indian Army. Most of the population here is connected with the Army installations in the area. Near to Dhupgarh is a rarely used airstrip. Tigers and Panther sightings are common here. Tourists visit here through out the year but the best season time is from October to March. The hill station and the forests of the Satpuras, with their streams and waterfalls, are picturesque and home to much wildlife. The hill station lies within the Pachmarhi Biosphere Preserve. There are many cave paintings in the forests, some of which have been dated to be as much as 10000 years old. The place has rich timber reserves including teak. You can go for rock climbing and horse back riding or trekking in Satpura National Park and stay there in overnight camps. Here you can taste the typical Gujarati/Maharashtrian/Jain food. The main holiday accommodations and shopping areas are in the civilian portion of the town which lies towards the tip of a lake. There are numerous holiday homes, resorts and cottages here. Pachmarhi can be reached directly by bus from Bhopal, which is 210 km away or from Nagpur by road. The nearest railway station and nearest airport to the hill station are Pipariya(at 47 kms) and Bhopal.
