Kannur is a district of Kerala state. It is said that this was the ancient port of Naura, from where King Solomon’s ships collected timber to build the great temple of Jerusalem. The city is cradle of many a colourful folk art forms like Theyyam. The scenic landscape of the city is dotted with ancient forts, and old shrines.
The major tourist attractions here are the St. Angelos Fort built in Portuguese architectural style, the Thalassery Fort, an important scenic spot, Kannur beach and Ezhimala. Gundert Bungalow and the Madayi mosque constructed in 1124, using marble brought from Mecca.
The main places to visit in Kannur are:
Fort St. Angelos: The fort is located to the west of Kannur town. This was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida. The fort is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
Moppila Bay: This is a natural fishing harbor near to Fort St. Angelos. There is a sea wall projecting from the fort separating the rough sea and inland water. Now this has turned into a modernized fishing harbor.
Thalassery Fort: The fort was built by the British in 1700, on a small hill called Tiruvellapadkunnu. The fort is square structure built of laterite with massive ventilated walls and strong flanking parapets. The famous St. John's Anglican Church is located just behind this fort.
Muzhappilangad Beach: This is the only drive-in beach in Kerala. You can drive an entire length of 4 kms. The beach is located at about 15 kms from Kannur city. The beach is protected by black rocks and is shallow making it a swimmer’s paradise.
Payyambalam Beach Resort: This is one of the beautiful beaches in Kerala located close to Kannur town. The mortal remains of ' Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pilla, A.K. Gopalan, K.P. Gopalan, Pamban Madhavan and K.G. Marar are laid to rest near this resort.
Ezhimala: This is an ancient historical site located 38 kms north of Kannur. This was the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings. It is said that Lord Budha had visited the place. There is an old mosque, believed to contain the mortal remains of Shaikh Abdul Latif, a Muslim reformist, is also located here. The hill here is noted for rare medicinal herbs. The place is bordered by sea on three sides. It is here the Indian Naval Academy is situated.
Pazhassi Dam: This is a famous scenic damsite located 37kms from Kannur city. There are facilities provided by the DTPC for the tourists to have pleasure boating at the reservoir. Accommodation facilities are available at the Project Inspection Bungalow and its dormitories.
Pythal Mala: This is a beautiful hill station located 65 kms from Kannur Town. There is a trek of 6 kms to reach the top of the hills. The hill station is situated 4,500 ft. above sea level near the Kerala - Karnataka border. This hill station is rich in flora and fauna. It is a 6 km trek to the top of the hills.
Gundert Bungalow: The Bungalow is located 20 kms from Kannur. It is here, the revered German Missionary, Dr. Herman Gundert lived for 20 years from 1839. This is the place where one of the first malayalam dictionaries and the first malayalam newspaper Rajyasamacharam took shape.
Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu: The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is located 18 kms from Kannur town. The park houses a large collection of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes most of which are becoming extinct gradually.
The nearest airport to Kannur is Calicut International airport. The city is well connected by rail and road transport.
