Kottayam is a city of Kerala. The city is the administrative capital of Kottayam district. The panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands, hills and hillocks, extensive rubber plantations, places associated with many legends and a totally literate people are the unique characteristics of the city. Kottayam is the land of letters, legends, latex and lakes. It is a main trading center of spices and commercial crops, especially rubber. The city is also called as "Akshara Nagari" which means the "city of letters" considering the city’s contribution to print media and literature. The city is the first town in India to have achieved 100% literacy. Kottayam is the first town in India selected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India to be transformed as an Eco City. The nearest attractions of the city are Peermade, Munnar, Thekkady, Ernakulam and the temple city, Madurai. The city is also gateway to the pilgrim centers of Sabarimala, Mannanam, Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Bharananganam, Erumeli, and Manarcaud.
The main tourist attractions of Kottayam are:
Vaikom Mahadeva Temple: The oldest and biggest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for the Vaikkath Asthami celebrations in November/December. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be from the ‘Treta yuga’ and considered as one of the oldest temples in Kerala where pooja has not been broken since inception.
Vagamon: This is a hill station located in Kottayam- Idukki border of Kerala. The fresh cool air, murmuring Pine forest, small waterfalls, and attractive meadows adds to the beauty of the hill station.
Malliyoor Sri Maha Ganapathi Temple: The temple is situated near to Vaikom and Ettumanoor. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganapathy.
Tomb of Saint Alphonsa: This is a must visit place for a Catholic. It is in Bharananganam, near Pala in Kottayam District.
Elaveezhapoonchira: The place is surrounded by three enchanting hillocks - Mankunnu, Kodayathoormala and Thonippara. This is a good scenic spot for trekking.
Kumarakom: Kumarakom is a tourist paradise located 13 kms from the city. The place offers wide variety of flora, exotic sightseeing, boating and fishing experience. A houseboat tour here will really take you to the height of enjoyment and ecstasy.
The other main spots to visit here are Kumaranalloor Bhagavathy Temple, Saraswathy Temple, Pallippurathu Kavu Temple, Kumarakom Beach, Poonjar Palace, Subramania Swami Temple, etc.
