Thrissur is a district of Kerala. The previous name of the city is Trichur. The city is the cultural capital of Kerala. The place is built around a hillock Thekkinkaadu Maidan on which the famous Vadakkunathan Temple is situated. You could find here numerous events of historic and cultural importance.
The main tourist attractions here are:
Guruvayurappan Temple: The temple is dedicated to God Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The idol here is more than 5000 years old. Thousands of tourists visit here throughout the year.
Vadakkunnathan Temple: This is a famous Shiva temple in Thrissur. The temple is built in the traditional architectural style of Kerala and has monumental towers on all four sides and also a kuttambalam. There are also mural paintings depicting various episodes from Mahabharata inside the temple. This temple is the venue of the famous Thrissur Pooram Festival.
Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls: These are two beautiful scenic waterfalls located 5 kms apart on the edge of the Sholayar forest ranges. The waterfalls join the Chalakudy river after falling down 80 ft. The cool spray near the falls that covers a large area makes Athirapally a must visit place. The Vazhachal waterfall is located close to dense green forests and is also a part of the Chalakudy river.
Anakkayam: The place is located 20kms from Chalakkudy and is famous for its lake with cool and serene waters. The place got its name as it is believed that an elephant got drowned in the lake and hence the place got its name. The silent streams, gushing waters and chiseled rocks here are really beautiful.
Peechi Dam: The Wildlife Sanctuary here is about 23 Kms from Thrissur. This is a beautiful picnic spot. There is boating facilities available here through the reservoir. You can also see elephants and wild dogs wandering in the forest. You could see there a large variety of orchids here.
Punnathur Kotta: This was a palace of a local ruler. Now this place is famous for the elephant pound also known as Anakkotta or 'Elephant Fort' where the elephants belonging to the Guruvayoor temple are kept. This is located in Kottapadi, near Guruvayoor in Thrissur. Here elephants are trained for purposes related to temples. There are about 64 elephants. Gajapooja (Worshipping Elephants) and Anayoottu (Feeding Elephants) are observed here, as offering to Lord Ganesha.
Thrissur Zoo: The Zoo is located 2 kms from Thrissur town. There are endangered species like the Asiatic lion, tiger and the extremely rare lion-tailed macaque among its collection. Its impressive reptile-house such as the majestic king cobra, Indian python and krait is counted among the best in South India.
Dhoni: This hilltop is about 15 Kms from Palakkad. The place is famous for its farmhouse, harbouring hundreds of cattle of Swiss variety. You can trek for three hours from the base of the Dhoni hills to reach the reserve forest area.
The nearest airport to Thrissur is Cochin International Airport located at Nedumbassery. Thrissur is very well connected by rail and road transport.
