Kolkata formerly called Calcutta is the capital of West Bengal. The city is also nicknamed as the City of Palaces and also the City of Joy. The main tourist attractions here are:
Victoria Memorial: This is a fantastic museum in Kolkata built in 1921. This is a large marble building built in memory of Queen Victoria. Here you can see photos and sculptures of prominent personalities, who had made great contribution in the glory of India. The Victoria Memorial has about 25 galleries. These include the royal gallery, the national leaders gallery, the portrait gallery, central hall, the sculpture gallery, the arms and armoury gallery and the new, Calcutta gallery.
Fort William: This is one of the main tourist attractions of Kolkata. The fort was named after King William III of England. The black hole tragedy took place in the guard room of this two-storied building. The basic purpose to build this fort was to prevent attacks from Muslim invaders.
Saheed Minar was formerly known as Octerloney Monument. The Minar is situated near Esplanade on the Kolkata Maidan. Its foundation is based on the Egyptian style, whereas the main Shahid Minar in Calcutta and its dome follow Syrian and Turkish designs. By standing at the top of the minar, you will get an excellent view of the hub city of Kolkata.
Marble palace: This palace was built in 1835 by Rajendra Mallick. It is a beautiful art gallery. The palace houses the marvelous objects of art, sculptures, pictures & oil paintings. The main attraction here is the Reuben's masterpieces. You can also find the original paintings of Rembrandt, Reynolds and Van Goyen etc. There is a zoo also, where you can find different kinds of birds and animals.
Howrah Bridge: The Bridge is located over the Hoogli River. It is the busiest bridge of the world. It connects the city of Howrah to Calcutta. Hawrah Bridge is also known by the name 'Rabindra Setu'. It was set up in 1874. It stands on two 270 feet high pillars.
Eden Garden: This is a cricket stadium in Kolkata. This is the largest cricket stadium in India by seating capacity. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world.
Birla planetarium: It is one of the largest museums in Asia. This is a wonderful center of science, communication & environment. It is situated at the Eastern metropolitan bypass of Calcutta.
It provides useful piece of information about our solar system, galaxies, life span of stars, space, planets and other heavenly bodies with astronomical presentations and through audio video aids. Its astronomy gallery maintains a huge collection of fine paintings & celestial models of renowned astronomers.
The best time to visit here is October to March. Kolkata is very well connected to the rest of the India with its extensive railway network. The nearest airport is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport about 20 kms from the main city.
