Chikmagalur is a district of Karnataka. Literally the name Chikmagalur means "The town of the younger daughter" in Kannada. There are many holy spots and tourist places in this place. The highest peak in Karnataka, Mullayanagiri is 12 Kms away from Chikmagalur.

Some of the main tourist spots here are:

Amruthapura: The place is about 67 kms from Chikkmagalur. It is here the famous Amriteshwara temple situated. The temple is an excellent specimen of Hoysala style.

Ayyanakere : The place is located 18 kms from Chikmagalur town. This ancient tank here was constructed by Rukmangada raya, a chief of Sakrepatna. Now the tank provides irrigation facility to about 1,500 hectares of land.

The Bababudan Range: This is one of the highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris. The peak is named after the Muslim saint Baba Budan. It is believed that the saint Baba Budan brought back seven seeds of coffee from his pilgrimage to Yemen and planted the seeds around his shrine, which soon spread to other regions.

Ballala Rayana Durga: From here we can get an amazing view of the Western Ghats from the parapet of this ancient fort. The ancient ruins of the Hoysala fort are located on top of a hill.

Balehonnur: The place is located 45 kms from the town. The famous Shrimad Jagadguru Rambhapuri Veerasimhasana Mahasamstana Peeta and the Veerabhadra Temple are the main attractions here.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary: The Sanctuary is situated 38 kms from the town. The main wildlife found here are Gaur, Elephants, Tiger, Leopard, Sambar, Chital spotted deer, Boar, Porcupine, Muntjac, birds like the Peacock, Parrot, Partridge, Pigeon, Munia and Bee eaters, and reptiles such as King Cobras and Indian Rock Pythons.

Kudremukh: Kudremukh is about 95 kms from the town. The name literally means 'horse face'. The mountain ranges here look like the face of a horse. The deep valleys and steep precipices of this hill station have great natural beauty.

The best time to visit Chikmagalur is between September to March. The nearest airport to Chikmagalur is Mangalore airport, about 170km from Chikmagalur. The nearest railway stations are Kadur, about 40 kms from the town and Hassan about 60 kms from the town.
